A Mentor/Mentee Friendship
by Bobbie Freitag
Destiny H. and I met for the first time in April, 2010 at a Women Helping Girls (WHG) bowling party - Destiny’s first WHG event. Shortly afterward, we were matched as mentee and mentor. Getting to know each other has been a lot of fun, especially discovering common interests and sharing favorite things. We’ve made trips to museums, art galleries, the zoo, movies, parks, bowling, mini golf, and lots of lunches and dinners out, usually trying restaurants that neither of us have been to before. Discovering that we both love to bake, we get together to make treats for WHG events, and even baked a surprise as a gift for Destiny’s mom for Mother’s Day. We always have lots of laughs when we’re cooking, even when some of the recipes create quite a mess. Destiny’s family has invited me to school band concerts, birthday parties, and an 8th grade graduation party, so there are always plenty of activities to enjoy together.

Features
Heberle Stables Event! Seventeen girls and eight adults went to Heberle Stables on January 14th, for a chance to learn about horses, riding, how a stable operates, and more. Heather Heberle, owner, greeted the girls and told them about the stables and the horses that are there. Then, she turned the remainder of the day over to her capable students that work at the stables in exchange for an opportunity to take riding lessons.

Although the day was cold, the girls were eager to learn as much as they could about the animals in the barn (including several cats and dogs), what the horses ate and how they are groomed. There wasn’t a detail that they didn’t ask about. Each girl had a chance to brush the horses as well as ride two of the horses in the indoor lesson ring.
Garth Fagan Dance
Garth Fagan Dance Company, Rochester’s critically acclaimed dance group, performed at the Nazareth College Arts Center in December.
Mentors and mentees from Women Helping Girls (WHG) had an opportunity to attend the performance that highlighted Garth Fagan’s newest work, “Madiba.” This was a portrait of the “world changing power” of Nelson Mandela, a man who after decades of imprisonment “would transcend bitterness and pain to lead his country and the world.”
To experience the fluidity and balance of dance in a variety of programs with the sound of different types of music, with the beauty of the costumes and the mystery of the lighting and the sets created a magical evening for all to remember.
