WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO BECOME A WHG MENTOR?
You can make a difference in the life of a girl in the 6th to 12th grades. Won't you help today?
Here's how:
- Complete the Volunteer Application.
- Attend a one-session Volunteer Orientation. You will learn about WHG and the various types of volunteer opportunities, including mentoring.
- Attend a one-session Mentor Orientation, where you will learn about the expectations of mentors, mentees, and the girls' families.
- Attend three sessions of Mentor Training, which discuss relationship building, teaching life skills, and academic preparation.
- Undergo a background check: WHG will conduct a background check on your driver's license and auto insurance, as well as check the Child Abuse Registry.
- Sign the Mentor Agreement, which outlines responsibilities and expectations for the year.
- Be matched with a mentee: The Mentor Coordinator makes a match and arranges for your first meeting with the mentee and parents. Note that introductions may occur at the Wilson Foundation Academy or Wilson Commencement Academy, at the mentee's home, or at another site acceptable to all parties.
- The Mentor Coordinator will be in contact with mentor, mentee, and parent to monitor progress.
WHAT IS THE TYPICAL SCHEDULE FOR RECRUITING & TRAINING?
WHG is implementing an annual schedule that will provide a predictable framework for recruitment, orientation, and training. The following is the proposed schedule for 2011-2012:
- March: Volunteer Recruitment
- April: Volunteer Orientation
 Volunteer Application completed
Background checks begin
- May: Mentor Orientation
Mentor Application completed
- June: Graduation
Annual Meeting of Program Committee & WHG Community
Annual Picnic and Awards Presentation
Mentor Training I
- July: Mentor Training II
- August: Mentor Training III
- September: Recruitment of girls
Mentor Gathering
- October: Volunteer Orientation
Volunteer Application completed
Background checks begin
- November: Matching
- December: Matching
- January: Mentee Induction
- February: Mentor Gathering
