2010-2011 EVENTS
Leadership Academy: Several WHG members attended the week-long Leadership Academy at SUNY at Brockport this past summer. The Leadership Academy helped the girls create self-awareness, build character and self-confidence, and enhance decision-making skills through fun programs. They returned with a rich varied experience to share with us.
August Mentee-Mentor Softball Game at Cobbs Hill Park.
September's Welcome Back Event for 2010-11: Fifty-eight people joined us for "What Can You Bring to the Table?" This event taught us that we all have something to contribute. We each need to find our strength, feed it, and recognize its value in a group/team situation. We learned that a leader is someone who makes a greater difference than one person can make alone. We learned how to motivate, engage, and inspire individuals and teams by practicing and honing the skills we already possess.
October's Fashion Show: At the Women's Council of Reators 14th Annual Fall Fashion Show and Charity Auction, one of our mentor/mentee pairs spoke at the event, describing their relationship and how meaningful a WHG relationship can be for both participants.
Cooking for the Community: On October 30, 17 girls and 24 mentors and volunteers spent a few hours together making a phenomenal meal for the Ronald McDonald House residents.
November's Fostering Leadership Skills Seminar and Luncheon: Keith Greer of International Strategies led our group, and brought us a compassionate, focused and creative workshop that helped us tap into our own sense of personal power so that we can direct our own future and create change.
December's Celebration of Cultures: Winter Holidays at the House.
January's Bowling and Pizza Party at Clover Lanes.
Women's Foundation Genesee Valley Breakfast honoring award recipients.
Leadership Day at RIT
March Tour of Susan B. Anthony's House: Twenty-one members of WGH attended the Susan B. Anthony House tour, followed by activities involving the girls in what it might have been like to write a speech, chant or create signs in support of Women's Rights ... and then Susan B. Anthony came for a visit. The girls learned about abolitionists and slavery by creating posters for upcoming rallies, writing their own speeches to champion the cause, and cheers as if they were present for a speech. There is something lovely about young women seeing history come alive; realizing it relates to them today, and isn't something only read in a book. One of the girls even said, "I think I might like to be a historian of some kind. I love old things."
Coordinator Chloe Anderson planned a Beau-Tea Party in March, as a mentor appreciation event.
Lion King: We had 40 ladies and girls attend The Lion King musical at the Auditorium Theater. A wonderful evening! The excitement in the room was palpable - 26 buses of school kids will create energy that can't be found elsewhere. The girls spent the evening reveling in art, dancing, costumes and colors.
April Fundraiser: WHG held a fundraiser at the Browncroft Community Sale. A huge thank you to Martin and Sandy Swanson for letting us take over their garage Thursday through Saturday. Also, an enormous thank you to those who volunteered as staff at the sale, and/or brought donations! Our combined efforts generated $475 for Women Helping Girls!
Rochester Mentors Expo attended by Skye Bird and Amy Kauffman in May. Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks was the keynote speaker and encouraged all mentors to stay involved because of the impact they are having on their mentees in the Rochester City School District.
"Friends of Women Helping Girls Event" sponsored by Women Helping Girls and
Monroe Community College on May 11, with the goal of creating a circle of friends who could promote our organization, alert us to opportunities for programming and funding, and offer their own skills and talents to WHG. Guests offered to speak at WHG events, give tours of their workplaces, take mentor/mentee pairs to lunch, participate on career panels, and give workshops on special interest topics.
Mother's Day Luncheon: More than 50 girls, moms, grandmothers, and mentors attended our annual Mother's Day Luncheon at a local restaurant. Kuumba Consultant Delores Radney offered supplies and expertise for jewelry-making. After a lovely lunch, Delores led a story telling session. Mothers and daughters shared memories, laughter, and tears, as they shared favorite stories of one another.
June's Annual Picnic at the Wegman's Lodge in Seneca Park: The picnic celebrates the end of the academic year and brings together the girls, their families, mentors, and volunteers in a casual and warm environment.
